Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
In OCD, the brain gets fixed on a particular thought or urge and just can’t let go. Obsessions are thoughts, images, or impulses that occur over and over again. Obsessive thoughts may range from the idea of losing control, to themes surrounding religion or may worry excessively about dirt and germs and be obsessed with the idea that they are unhygienic. Or have fears of accidentally harmed someone else.
Compulsions are acts the person performs over and over again to help reduce the anxiety surrounding the obsessions. People with an obsession about being unhygienic may wash their hands continuously till their hands become raw and inflamed, or a person may repeatedly check that she has turned off the stove or iron because of an obsessive fear of burning the house down. Or may count certain objects over and over because of an obsession about losing them.
Most people about 90% who have OCD have both obsessions and compulsions. The thoughts and behaviors of a person with OCD are senseless, repetitive, distressing, and sometimes harmful. OCD symptoms cause distress, take up a lot of time, or significantly interfere with the person’s work, social life, or relationships. |
