Pulmonary Tuberculosis

Pulmonary tuberculosis is a contagious bacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB).

The lungs are chiefly involved, but the infection can spread to other organs. Mycobacterium is a bacterium found throughout the world and can be difficult to treat.  Mostly, when the bacterium invades the body it triggers an immune response, killing off most of the organisms in the course of the initial infection.  This is called a primary infection and often does not cause any major symptoms. TB may occur within weeks after the primary infection, or it may lie dormant for years before causing disease.

This disease can develop after inhaling droplets sprayed into the air from a cough or sneeze by someone infected with tuberculosis. Infants, the elderly, and individuals who AIDS, those undergoing chemotherapy, are at higher risk of contracting TB. The risk of contracting TB becomes greater with the frequency of contact with people who have the disease, and with crowded or unsanitary living conditions and poor nutrition. Without effective treatment, the disease becomes progressive. Treatment is a long process and requires months to years of therapy, often with multiple medications. 

Some of the symptoms that might occur are, fatigue, weight loss, coughing up blood, fever and night sweats, cough producing phlegm, sweating excessively, chest pain and having breathing difficulty.
