Epilepsy is a recurring seizure disorder caused by abnormal electrical discharges from brain cells, often in the cerebral cortex. There are over 40 different types of seizure, but the two main types of seizure are partial and generalised. Partial seizures involve part of the brain, while generalised seizures involve the whole brain. Partial seizures can become generalised seizures if the epileptic activity spreads to the whole brain.

Normally, nerve transmission in the brain occurs in an arranged way, allowing a smooth flow of electrical activity. When a seizure occurs, these neurons generate uncoordinated electrical discharges that spread throughout the brain. This can happen with both normal and abnormal nerve cells.

Seizures are not linked with any particular disease. Many abnormalities of the nervous system can result in seizure activity such as, genetic factors, head injury, seizures can occur at the time of a stroke or many years later disorders, metabolic disturbances, infections of the nervous system, brain tumors, brain damage in infancy, the presence of certain drugs can cause seizure activity, there are many neurodegenerative disorders that are accompanied by seizures.

Seizures in new born child, infants, and toddlers most commonly result from prenatal brain injury, congenital central nervous system malformations, and metabolic derangements.
