Colorectal Carcinoma

Colorectal carcinoma can occur anywhere in the colon or rectum. Together, the colon and rectum form a long, muscular tube called the large intestine.

The colon makes up most of the large intestine; the rectum makes up the last few inches. Colorectal carcinoma is the third most frequent cancer in adult men and the second most common in adult women. African-Americans have an increasing occurrence of colorectal cancer.

It is very rare in children, but it occurs in children, these tumors may appear at any site in the large intestine and may or may not be associated with a family history of large bowel cancer. Some cases of colorectal carcinoma are hereditary but most of them are related to environmental factors such as dietary red fat and animal fat. Symptoms usually include changes in bowel habits (constipation, diarrhea, bloating, pain with bowel movements), an abdominal mass, weight loss, decreased appetite and blood in the stool.

Early diagnosis and surgical removal of the colon removes the risk of developing carcinoma of the intestine. Children with ulcerative colitis are at a higher risk of developing colorectal carcinoma. A previous colonic neoplasm increases the risk of a second tumor.
